Archerfield FAQ’s
What are the motorcycle licence requirements in Queensland?
To begin the QRide Pre-Learner course you must hold a Queensland driver’s licence (car) for a minimum of 12 months. You must be medically fit to ride, and you’ll need to pass a 30-question Motorcycle Knowledge Test and a Hazard Perception Test before progressing to the RE Licence course. There is no separate riding test at a TMR centre — your Stay Upright instructor assesses you as competent during the course and submits the result directly to TMR.
How do I get a motorcycle licence in Queensland?
To get a motorcycle licence in Queensland you complete the QRide system — a government-accredited training and assessment pathway run by approved providers like Stay Upright. The process has three stages: a two-day Pre-Learner course to get your Learner Permit, a one-day Restricted (RE) Licence course after 90 days on your Learner, and finally a half-day Unrestricted (R) Licence course after two years on your RE. All courses are delivered at our Archerfield (Brisbane) and Townsville training centres, with bike and gear included.
Can I get a Queensland motorcycle licence if I hold an interstate licence?
It depends on your interstate licence class. If you hold a current interstate motorcycle licence of an equivalent class you may be able to transfer directly to a Queensland licence through TMR without completing QRide courses. Contact TMR or Stay Upright for advice based on your specific licence.
Is the QRide Unrestricted (R) course mandatory?
No. You only need the QRide Unrestricted (R) course if you wish to ride an unrestricted (non-LAMS) motorcycle in Queensland. After holding your RE licence for two years you automatically receive an R-class Learner Permit, but you must complete and pass the R course before upgrading to a full open licence.
What happens after I complete the QRide Pre-Learner course?
Once assessed as competent, Stay Upright submits your result to TMR. You then complete a 30-question Motorcycle Knowledge Test online or at a TMR service centre and pay the licence fee. TMR issues your Learner Permit, allowing you to ride a LAMS-approved motorcycle under supervision on Queensland roads.
Is Stay Upright an accredited QRide provider?
Yes. Stay Upright is accredited by the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) as a Registered Service Provider to deliver QRide motorcycle licensing courses. Stay Upright is also a nationally accredited RTO (code 90714) under ASQA.
Where is the Archerfield QRide training centre located?
Stay Upright Archerfield is located at Lot 10 Beaufighter Ave, Archerfield Airport, Archerfield QLD 4108 — within the Archerfield Airport precinct in Brisbane’s southern suburbs. Free on-site parking is available. Convenient for riders from Ipswich, Logan, Inala, Oxley, Moorooka, Rocklea, Salisbury and Sunnybank.
Do I need my own motorcycle or gear for the QRide course?
No. For the Pre-Learner and RE courses Stay Upright provides everything — motorcycle, helmet and gloves are all included in the course fee. For the Unrestricted R course you may bring your own R-class (non-LAMS) motorcycle if you prefer, but it is not required.
How much does the QRide Pre-Learner course cost at Archerfield?
The QRide Pre-Learner course at Stay Upright Archerfield starts from $459 for the full two-day course. Bike, helmet and gloves are included. You can spread the cost with interest-free Afterpay. Weekday and weekend sessions are available.
How long does it take to get a motorcycle licence in Queensland?
At minimum the QRide process takes just over 2 years from scratch: 2 days for the Pre-Learner course, then 90 days on your Learner Permit before you can do the RE course, then 2 years on your RE licence before upgrading to a full R licence. If you just want to ride a LAMS bike, you can be legally on the road within about 3-4 days of completing the Pre-Learner course.
What is QRide and how does it work in Queensland?
QRide (also written Q-Ride) is the Queensland Government motorcycle training and licensing system run by the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR). Instead of a separate riding test at TMR, you complete competency-based training and assessment with an accredited provider like Stay Upright. Once assessed as competent, your provider submits your result directly to TMR and you can upgrade your licence online or at a TMR service centre.
Is it mandatory to complete the Q-Ride Unrestricted (R) course?
No. You only need to complete the Q-Ride Unrestricted (R) course if you wish to ride an unrestricted motorcycle in QLD without displaying L plates.

I’m new to riding a motorbike – will the Learner’s course teach me how?
The Q-Ride Pre-Learner course is an assessment designed by the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR). It focuses on preparing riders to ride on the road safely rather than teaching absolute beginners how to ride. If you’ve never ridden a motorcycle before, we highly recommend our Head Start Course. This beginner-friendly course is designed to introduce you to the basics of motorcycle riding in a safe and supportive environment and is a great way to try riding without having to commit to the full course.
Give me a break! And what about lunch?
Yes, courses include scheduled breaks, but our trainers are better on the track than they are in the kitchen, so you will need to bring your own lunch and refreshments. You can use small kitchen to heat up food or pop to one of the nearby food outlets instead.
What does LAMS mean?
LAMS is short for ‘Learner Approved Motorcycle Scheme’ – and are bikes that have been approved for Learners. A LAMS bike has an engine capacity of between 251 and 660cc, with a power output of less than 150kw per tonne.
Can I convert my overseas licence?
Visit Queensland Transport who will review your application for a QLD riders’ licence. They will issue you with a letter of authority to complete training.
