QRide Motorcycle Licence Courses — Townsville, QLD

Motorcycle Licence Training in Townsville – What You Need to Know
How do you get a motorcycle licence in Queensland?
To get a motorcycle licence in QLD, you start with a 2-day Q-Ride Pre-Learner course at our Townsville training centre. After holding your learner licence for at least 90 days, you complete your RE licence course, followed by your full R licence after two years.
How long does it take to get a motorcycle licence?
You can complete the Pre-Learner course in two days and legally ride as a learner once you pass. The full licence process takes just over two years, but most riders can be on the road within a few days of starting.
Do I need my own motorcycle or gear?
No. Your motorcycle, helmet and gloves are all provided for the Pre-Learner and RE courses at Townsville. Most riders turn up with no gear and no riding experience.
What happens during the Pre-Learner course?
Day one focuses on basic control — clutch work, braking and slow-speed riding. Day two builds into more controlled riding, hazard awareness and the Q-Ride assessment.
What do beginners struggle with most?
Most beginners struggle with clutch control and slow-speed balance early on. That is normal, and it is exactly what the first part of the course is designed to improve.
Can I pass if I have never ridden before?
Yes. Most people doing the course at Townsville are complete beginners. The training is structured so you can go from zero experience to passing your assessment in two days.

How do I get my Queensland motorcycle licence?
Get your car licence first
Before you can start the Q-Ride motorcycle licensing pathway, you must hold a valid car (or other motor vehicle) licence for a minimum of 12 months. This is a Queensland government requirement for all Q-Ride courses.
If you're currently on your P-plates or haven't yet held a licence for 12 months, you can still take our optional Learn to Ride course (Step 2) to get a feel for riding — but you'll need to wait until you hit the 12-month mark before booking the Pre-Learner course.
Try our Learn to Ride course (Optional)
Not sure if riding is for you? Our 90-minute Learn to Ride course is the perfect way to find out. Held at our Archerfield training centre, you'll be guided through the basics — posture, controls, moving off and stopping — by one of our experienced instructors.
Small group sessions (maximum 5). Bike, helmet and gloves included. Cost: $99.
Complete the Q-Ride Pre-Learner course & get your Learner Permit
The two-day Q-Ride Pre-Learner course is the official first step on the Queensland licensing pathway. It's a government requirement to obtain your Learner's Permit and is designed to give you the fundamental riding knowledge and skills you need to ride safely on the road.
Once you successfully complete the course, you'll receive your certificate which you take to a TMR Customer Service Centre to obtain your Learner Permit. You're then legally able to ride on Queensland roads under the conditions of your permit.
Bike, helmet and gloves included. Weekday and weekend sessions available. Cost: from $439.
Hold your Learner Permit for 90 days, then complete Q-Ride RE
After holding your Q-Ride Learner Permit for a minimum of 90 days, you're eligible to progress to the Q-Ride Restricted (RE) Licence course. This one-day course builds on your learner experience with competency-based training and assessment on both the range and the road.
On successful completion, you'll receive your RE licence certificate to present at TMR. Your RE licence allows you to ride any LAMS-approved motorcycle without a supervisor.
Bike, helmet and gloves included. Weekday and weekend sessions available. Cost: from $289.
Hold your RE licence for 2 years, then complete Q-Ride R (Full licence)
The final step. After holding your RE licence for a minimum of two years, you can complete the Q-Ride Unrestricted (R) Licence course. This half-day course is conducted mainly on the road and focuses on reinforcing your skills, cognitive decision-making and risk management strategies.
On completion, you'll receive your certificate to present at TMR for your full open motorcycle licence — no more LAMS restrictions, access to any motorcycle you choose.
Bike, helmet and gloves included (or bring your own R-class bike — LAMS not permitted). Weekday and weekend sessions available. Cost: from $229.
